The Global Down Syndrome Foundation is a public nonprofit 501(c)(3) dedicated to significantly improving the lives of people with Down syndrome through Research, Medical Care, Education and Advocacy. Global’s primary focus is to support the Linda Crnic Institute for Down Syndrome, the first academic home in the U.S. solely committed to research and medical care for people with the condition. The Global Down Syndrome Foundation has funded over $10 million to research including grants investigating the co-occurrence of Alzheimer’s disease, certain leukemia’s immune disorders, sleep apnea and autism in the Down syndrome population. Global organizes the Be Beautiful Be Yourself Fashion Show – the largest single fundraiser benefiting people with Down Syndrome.
The Global Down Syndrome Foundation is an inclusive organization without political or religious affiliation or intention. Global believes that educating the U.S. government is important to correct the alarming disparity of founding for Down syndrome research.
I had the opportunity to be part of this incredible gala event. There were many celebrities, Jamie Foxx, a strong supporter and donor to this foundation, attended the event because his sister has this syndrome, the legendary quarterback Peyton Manning, Matt Dillon, Queen Latifah and the incredible Hilary Swank. It was an evening full of emotions, these magical guys have so much to teach to all of us. Their spontaneity, their sincerity in acting and saying everything they think, makes them pure and devoid of any constraint. Give them the opportunity to express themselves freely, to feel important and absolutely equal to all other human beings, is the best thing to do. We don’t even imagine how many lessons of life can give us these incredible creatures with just a chromosome more than us. I had the goose skin and tears in my eyes for the strong emotion, all night!!
I want to share a fragment of the evening with you, a part of speech by Frank Stephens an active spokesman for Global Down Syndrome.
Open your heart.
